Artist's Statement

bythewaves For me, art is about seeing the world in different ways. Perception is a choice about what we desire to see, an out picturing of our thoughts, and the artist freezes a particular perception to draw attention to it, to express its validity in his or her vision of the world. Ideally, art helps us to direct our varying perceptions with their constantly changing appearances on to a more constant, truthful vision of reality. This involves a relationship between the artist and the viewer, as well as the "subject" of an artwork.

This applies to both my landscape and figurative paintings.
The landscapes represents an interaction with an external nature, and the figure paintings primarily with an inner one. I also at times utilize the figure in my landscape paintings as a symbol of interaction with, and perception of, an external world, as well as a complete entity in itself; one system, the body, interacting with another, nature.

Human perception is that these are different, separate systems at times, not at others. This dichotomy, and the search for harmonious relationships resulting from its creative resolution, is the major focus of my work. Oneness vs separation, and the harmonious resolution of this duality.

There is a vision of life that is based purely on the reality of love, love as the one cause, that alone which can give and maintain life. When this is revealed and experienced and is the ground of inspiration, I believe the greatest art is created, and the greatest Truth seen.

To find the truth of life, based on the illuminating perception of love, is my deepest aspiration as an artist.
